Short-Sightedness (Myopia)
Distant objects appear blurry while near objects remain clear. This is the most common refractive error in Singapore.

Why is my vision blurry?
THE BASICS
In a perfect eye, light enters the lens and focuses directly on the retina.
-
The Problem: In a myopic eye, the eyeball is too long. This causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it.
-
The Result: The image sent to your brain is out of focus for distant objects (like road signs or movie screens), but mostly remains sharp for reading depending on the degree of myopia.

Signs & Symptoms
Are you struggling with these signs?
Eye strain is often the first silent sign of uncorrected vision
- Blurry Distance Vision: Road signs, cinema screens, or whiteboards appear out of focus.
- The "Squint" Reflex: You subconsciously narrow your eyes to see sharpness.
- Tension Headaches: Recurring pain behind the eyes or forehead after visual tasks.
- Night Vision Issues: Glare, halos, or fuzzy vision when driving at night.
- Visual Fatigue: Feeling the need to close your eyes frequently during the day.

Symptoms often develop gradually. You might not realize how much clarity you have lost until you experience these daily struggles:

Clarifying Your Concerns
Frequently Asked Questions
We understand that vision correction is a significant decision. Here are honest, transparent answers to the questions we hear most often from our patients.
Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry while near objects remain clear. It happens when light focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Myopia develops when the eyeball grows longer than normal or the cornea is too curved. It often begins in childhood and may gradually increase over time. It is often associated with hereditary as well as environmental factors eg. reading in the dark, holding reading materials too close to the eye
Yes. Myopia commonly progresses during childhood and teenage years. Regular eye examinations help monitor changes and guide appropriate correction.
Myopia can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or laser vision correction. Suitability depends on your prescription, corneal thickness, and overall eye health.
The OneLaser™ Programme is a personalised, AI-guided laser treatment designed to correct refractive errors including myopia. It uses a real-time tracking excimer laser to reshape the cornea without creating a corneal flap. An eye assessment is required to determine suitability.
Some patients with higher prescriptions may be suitable for laser procedures, while others may require alternative options such as SMILE Pro or implantable lenses. A detailed evaluation will determine the safest approach.
The Ministry of Health classifies laser vision correction as a lifestyle procedure, so Medisave is not claimable. However, we offer 0% interest installment plans to make the procedure accessible.
If you notice increasing blur when looking at distant objects, frequent changes in glasses, or eye strain, it is advisable to arrange a comprehensive eye evaluation.
